School fees in Portugal can be confusing, especially when comparing international schools with different pricing structures. Here's how to make sense of them.
Types of fees
Registration fee
A one-off (or annual) admin fee paid when you apply. Typically €200–€800. Often non-refundable.
Enrolment / matriculation fee
Paid once you're accepted and reserve a place. Can range from €500 to €5,000+ at premium international schools.
Annual tuition
The main recurring cost. At international schools, this ranges from roughly €8,000/year at the lower end to €25,000+/year at top IB schools in Lisbon and Cascais.
Extras
Always ask for a full fee schedule — the "tuition" headline figure often excludes 20–40% of the real annual cost.
State schools
Portuguese state schools are free for EU residents. Non-EU families on a valid visa also have access. Quality varies significantly by region; urban state schools in Lisbon and Porto can be excellent.
IPSS / subsidised nurseries
For children under 3, IPSS (social solidarity institution) nurseries offer income-scaled fees — often €50–€300/month — significantly cheaper than private crèches. Waiting lists can be long.
